Played at GSK sports ground, Ealing
Report by Hassan Khan

This inaugural fixture at the stunning GSK sports ground, was played in glorious sunshine and provided thrilling cricket.

GSK (GlaxoSmithKline) elected to bat first on a feather-bed wicket. However, the OFCC opening bowlers, both doctors, cut through the GSK top order with the precision of a surgeon's knife. Khan and Khalil shared the wickets as a powerful GSK batting card was tottering at 25-5 after 8 overs, plus one GSK batsman retired hurt after a deep cut to his lip.

This led to a rearguard action as GSK patiently accumulated 207-9 from 35 overs. Steve Hamilton broke a big partnership and eight bowlers were used but the injured batsman, complete with a bloody shirt, returned to crash 66 crucial runs.

The OFCC run chase was dominated by a brilliant 77 from Az, thus completing a superb all round performance. He was ably supported by Raj and leg spinner Farhad. The GSK bowlers were hostile, accurate and backed up by effective sledging. Our chirpy wicket keeper, Kaf, was unsurprisingly targeted after being bowled for 0.

With myself and Israr at the crease, 21 was required from 30 balls. A tsunami of tension built up as GSK now began to appeal vociferously every time the ball hit the pads. Israr and I were bowled by GSK quickie Anand. Chandra smashed a no ball to the boundary but consistent pressure left us two runs short when Steve was controversially given LBW, leaving secret weapon John Shaw unused.

Wild celebrations from GSK confirmed how close and tense the match was. In true cricketing spirit, GSK sledging was followed by warm handshakes, smiles and an offer from their captain Nasser for a second game this season.
