|7 Aug, 2016||Friendly vs Hobgoblin Nomads||Won by 6 wickets|
Played at Hilly Fields
This inaugural fixture at Hilly Fields, South London, took place in brilliant sunshine. Captain Steve Hamilton lost the toss and the Hobgoblin Nomads elected to bat on a good wicket.
A strong seam attack kept the watchful Hobgoblin batsmen on their toes. The run rate was rarely above 3, except when the OFCC spinners, Steve & leggie Farhad, were bowling. Despite 38 from Ramsey and 29 from both Lynch and Phil K, Hobgoblin finished on a below par 155-9 from 40 overs. Pick of the bowlers was Sharm with 2-9 from 8 overs; Khan [i.e. the author of this report] bowled eight consecutive overs for 2-30; and Raj brilliantly mopped up the tail to end with 3-10 from five overs.
The Hobgoblin opening bowlers, Manning and Jackson, bowled with pace and accuracy to leave OFCC precarious at 27-3. However, here a crucial tactical error from Niz, the Hobgoblin captain, resulted in both these two bowling out their allotted overs. Their support bowlers were not as effective and Az took full advantage. By now, the sun was scorching and Calypso music was blaring from a neighbouring barbecue. Az's superb timing chimed with the beat, his entire body convulsing in synchrony with breathtaking square cuts, pulls and drives. He contributed 98 not out in an unbroken stand of 129 with Trishnan. The latter finished on 23 n/o but was also crucial to our victory.
In summary, yet another win for captain Steve Hamilton. A good team effort.
