Played at Victoria Park, pitch 2
Report by Hassan Khan
This VPCCL fixture saw us continue our quest to end the season with
a few wins and climb from the bottom of Division Two.
won the toss, I elected to bat and openers Waseem and Matt provided
a solid early platform. When debutant Waseem holed out for a brisk
21, the in-form Ilyas continued the good work. Wickets fell
regularly but I knew that if we could bat our overs, a score of
120-130 was defendable.
A clutter of wickets and yours truly
suffering a freak pre-batting ankle sprain from the infamous
Victoria Park pot holes left us at risk of being bowled out early.
However, a vital partnership between Jack and Steve took us to our
best Division Two total of the season: 139-5, thanks in particular
to some great hitting in the last over from Jack.
opening bowlers contrasted between the excellent Umair, swinging the
ball in to the right handers skillfully for three early wickets and
myself bowling pathetically on a sprained left ankle.
there was method in my madness. As the opposition consolidated to
need 60 from the last eight overs, Steve's off spin provided the
perfect foil for some hostile fast bowling from Waseem. The pair
took 3-36 from seven overs to leave us victorious by 19 runs in a
contest that had hitherto ebbed & flowed.
A special mention
for Steve's celebration after Ilyas caught his second victim - there
was hilarity and concern in equal measure as Ilyas couldn't breathe
for a few seconds afterwards!
A good competitive game and
some fine cricket. Well done to all.
