September sunshine saw Spartan CC win the toss and elect to bat on a greenish wicket. At 9-1 after 8 overs, their decision seemed to have backfired.

That was until the infamous Fallopians outfield catching allowed a partnership to build. With one side of the ground 20 yards shorter, several balls were deposited into the neighbouring tennis courts.

A opening score of 9-1 after eight overs, thanks also to some indifferent bowling, became 237-6 from 35 overs. The best of our bowlers was the evergreen John Shaw, 3-37 in 6 overs, including two wickets in two balls.

The sccoreboard pressure was overbearing, but our openers compiled a decent platform in reply. Silly runouts of key batsman Bharat and the stylish Mohit left us in a precarious state.

However, a classy 46 from debutant Chinni kept us within a glimmer of hope. Once he was caught in the deep, Sham joined me and his aggressive hitting reduced the target to 39 from 4 overs with 6 wickets remaining.

By now, Spartan were becoming agitated and began to appeal vociferously every ball. Their pressure on our umpire was duly rewarded with myself given LBW.

A promsing chase of 189-5 became 199 all out. The match was highly competitive and a couple of dropped catches separated defeat from victory.
