Played at Upminster
Report by Steve Hamilton

This was a last-minute fixture I arranged against a powerful Essex league side which included a few 2nds & 3rds and talented young colts in their team. We were definitely facing an up-hill battle!

Upminster won the toss and decided to bat. By drinks Upminster had reached 67 for 2 off 17 overs and it was pretty well in the balance.

After drinks their opening batsman Larke reached 50 and number four Lamount also reached 50, as they accelerated to 201 for three wickets off 32 overs. Nisar clean bowled Larke for 52, while Hamilton and Hussain took two wickets each. Lamount retired not out 101, and Upminster finished their overs on an impressive total of 252-6

A superb tea was laid on and I have to say the roast potatoes were unquestionably the highlight of the day for me. Perfectly crisp and light fluffy on the inside!

However, chasing a target of 253 wasn't going to be easy! Young colt R.Brown, who finished with figures of 5-0-8-2, bowled a marvellous opening spell of medium-to-fast deliveries, swinging the ball both ways. He took two early wickets and at 11-2 we needed to rebuild. Mushtaq and Turner steadied the ship for the while but we were always behind the nine ball as we reached 70 for 3 off 20 overs.

With the required run rate almost reaching over 10 an over, Shahzad and Kahlil both injected some urgency into our innings. They smashed the ball to all parts off the ground, but our hopes were only short-lived as their young colts took some outstanding catches. N.Brown, dangerous beyond his 12 years of age, came on towards the end and took the final three wickets, finishing with figures of 2-0-6-3. We were all out for 143.

It was not as one-sided as it looks. We had our moments, but it just wasn't our day! On paper I would say they were always the superior side. A return fixture is definitely on the cards for next season and I have to say their hospitality was first class!
