Played at Victoria Park, pitch 2
Report by Tim Castle

A great evening of competitive cricket, only spoilt by the other side winning.

Our high hopes of gaining a third successive victory were dampened from the start when Jack Turner pulled the 5th delivery of the match straight to square leg, with the score still at zero.

A defiant stand of 50 followed between Jack Holmes (still the league's MOST VALUABLE PLAYER) and Laurie Roberts (also valuable).

But Laurie and Jack's wickets fell soon after, for 19 and 28 respectively. After the previous weeks' 50-run retirements, Jack H's 28 proved to be our top score for the game.

Skipper Graham McGee was run out for 19, while Jonathan Stebbins (22) and Philip Barrass (10) held the fort until our 16 overs ran out. We were also assisted by a generous helping of wides, with the unfortunate Thah Weerasene costing the Camels 29 runs in his one over as lockdown stiffness hampered his aim.

Our confidence that our total of 130 was a competitive target was boosted by the dismissal of the Camels' opener Sambit Roy in the second over, caught at square leg (in a rare display of fielding competence) by your truly, off McGee's bowling.

This confidence proved short-lived as Camels' skipper Marcus Weekes (late of Chats Palace/Homerton) strode in and proceeded to pummel our best deliveries with steam-hammer blows high over the boundary.

Once Weekes retired on 55, we managed to notch up some minor victories against the lower-order batsmen, with both Ilyas Mansha and myself gaining caught-behinds in Jack Turner's safe gloves from slow looping deliveries.

But it was a case of too little, too late, and the Camels strode past our target with more than three overs to spare.
