May 30, 2000 | vs Tower Ravens | Lost by 6 wickets | |
By
the Finger (Philip Barrass) On a rare fine evening, the Fallopians were ruthlessly mauled, their death-rattle signalling a total of 36. Only John Idle, recent hero of a sub-four-hour London Marathon sprint, managed to ward off the pecking beaks and talons of the ravenous ravens. Carrying his bat, he ended on a courageous 15 not out, a feast of runs on such a night. Young Freddie Barrass showed his father's technique and tenacity towards the end, but these two apart there was little to cheer in this charnel house of decaying manhood. Young bloods Chris Taylor and Paul Marinko showed little regard for the Fallopians' proud history of resistance, going under with barely a run between them. Marenko seems determined to beat Mr Castle's long-held record of successive ducks. Mr Castle himself, despite the rigours of pre-season training, registered neither a run nor a wicket. (I wasn't even there! - TC). The
Ravens crowed as they easily ate away the Fallopians' skeletal lead,
winning in 5 overs. By 8pm there was nothing but a few sticky
remains to be scraped from the pitch.
