Friendly vs South Loughton

This was a tough fixture as South Loughton (SL), after a narrow win against us earlier this season, packed their side with top Essex League players. Tough became tougher when three of our guys dropped out on the day (confused by it - unusually - being a Saturday fixture).

Having won the toss, SL elected to bat on a green wicket and overcast conditions. Myself and raw but quick Mo Zubair opened the bowling. The SL openers were severe on anything loose and got off to a flyer. At this point, I suggested to Mo that maybe bowling six bouncers per over was predictable for the batsman! Then I placed a man at short leg! The ploy worked, as a full ball sent the off stump cartwheeling. The following over the leftie opener was bowled by me and at 48-2 from seven overs it was game on.

In strode the burly figure of SL skipper Rajiv. A 10 pints and 40 cigarettes a day man, he blasted his way to a quickfire 52, with minimal footwork. With the game fast slipping away, I put on the O.F. secret weapon. John Shaw bowled with guile and valour to take 3-38 from seven overs. At 138-5 from 25 overs SL were looking precarious.

That was until number eight Davies (a SL 1st XI player) helped them plunder 120 from the last 10 overs. He was brilliantly caught by Peter Frisby at deep long off for 89, but a commanding 258 left only one result possible.

With only 7 wickets needed, SL were always in control. I joined O.F. debutante Ryan at 30-3, and total was gradually taken to 75. Hereafter, a second collapse followed and we only passed 100 with batting assistance from two borrowed SL Colts.
