Played at Roding Valley Recreation Ground

This inaugural 2019 Sunday fixture was played in wintry April showers on a green wicket.

I lost the toss and, predictably, O.F were put into bat. Openers Vishnu and Ahmed, an O.F debutant, couldn't handle the prodigious swing. At 6 for 2 wickets, I joined Jack to face good swing bowling on a wicket offering both movement and unpredictable bounce. Jack played superbly and our left-hand right -hand combination did upset the bowlers' line.

Once the SLCC opening bowlers were finished, our relief quickly turned to dismay - their change seamers were quicker and extracted more bounce as well as swing. With rain now beating down and wind exaggerating lateral movement, Jack continued the fight.

6 for 2 became 76 for 3 when he was caught behind off a ball too close to cut for a brave 43. Hereafter, our innings lacked impetus but we still fought hard. The tail wagged to take us to 146 all out.

Early wickets were needed for O.F and in the second ball, an in-swinger did crash into the stumps. 0 for 1 wicket and SLCC were under pressure.

Sadly, our jubilation was short lived as two key factors turned against OFCC. The SLCC skipper was dropped and they would have been 10 for 2. Secondly, the weather improved so runs became easier to score.

Three further dropped chances at vital times gifted SLCC a comfortable nine-wicket win. So congratulations to SLCC but many positives for us against a Herts & Essex League side in tough playing conditions.
