This was our second fixture inside five weeks against our toughest opponents. They won the toss and, on a green wicket and slow outfield, inserted OFCC.

Excellent bowling lines, unpredictable bounce and prodigious swing ensured regular loss of wickets. Amid the havoc, however, there was probably the best ever innings I've seen by an O.F batsman. Against a quality Herts & Essex League attack in challenging conditions, Umair Shezad struck an imperious 82. His timing was impeccable and the constant clatter of stumps did not disrupt majestic strokeplay to all parts. A knock of 82 from our total of 132 all out probably gives sufficient context to Umair's brilliance.

Chasing 133, South Loughton benefitted from the now predictable spilled catches and sauntered to their target. With their 1st XI League opener on 77, I argued successfully that my duties as a father and team man were more important than his century. Despite being sledged constantly by the notorious Asad, he duly retired and at least our bowlers all had a go.
