Played at Victoria Park, pitch 1 Report by Hassan Khan (captain)
This VPCCL Cup fixture appeared a mismatch, as Victoria Lounge
are a top division side and we are in the lowest division. To give
context, they amassed 234 in 16 overs in one of their matches last
year.
VL won the toss and elected to bat in bright sunshine.
Openers Stevens and Neal struck the ball fluently but were checked
by some controlled OF bowling, backed up by good fielding. Indeed, a
powerful line up of hitters was restricted to under 200, thanks to
tidy bowling as a unit and excellent high intensity fielding which
yielded three run outs.
Chasing 188 from 16 overs, OF lost
an early wicket but a typically pugnacious 21 from Wake was
supported by a classy 35 from Stebbins, until the latter retired due
to vision problems. Our tempo accelerated, however, when the
dependable Holmes arrived at the crease. His effortless 42 was
backed up by lusty hitting from Tipu.
Alas, we fell 20 runs
short but a highly creditable effort against powerful opposition. VL
bowled 21 wides whereas we bowled only 7. Our batting was strong and
no catches were dropped. We just were beaten by a better team.
