Played at Victoria Park, pitch 1 Report by Hassan Khan (captain)
This was a good toss to win on a warm and humid evening. I opted
to bat and was rewarded with a superb opening stand between Tipu and
the in-form Holmes. They gave us a critical platform with 67 in 6
overs.
This was built on by a wonderfully aggressive 35 from
Dubey as the peerless Holmes retired on his second unbeaten 50 in
three innings. Phoenix improved their bowling in the final third and
a total of 170-180 was thus restricted to 154-5.
Chasing a
competitive total, Phoenix looked comfortable, until a a spearing
yorker from yours truly sent the dangerous Sagi's middle stump
cartwheeling. Phoenix' strategy of carefully seeing out my and
Tipu's overs backfired spectacularly, as Holmes and Wright now took
the baton.
With the required run rate now 12 an over these
two rampaged through a powerful Phoenix batting card. The OF
fielding was impeccable, including a stunning caught and bowled from
the unstoppable Holmes.
A shocked Phoenix were steamrollered
for 114, confirming a 40-run defeat with Holmes and Wright's
excellent bowling deservedly taking five of the seven wickets.
