We took on met Mile Tailenders in glorious evening sun hoping to
avoid a drenching from the black clouds drifting across the park. We
batted first but openers Jack Holmes and Matt Wake struggled to get
much off the bat, inching the score forward in singles and twos.
The pair held on for century partnership, with Holmes retiring
on 52 and Wake finally dismissed to a run out in the 15th over for
29. Laurie Roberts (9) and skipper Graham McGee (7) made brief
appearances at the end to push our’ total to 119-1.
Despite
the low target we were confident of making an early assault on the
Mile Tailenders’ reply. But a short shower of light rain at the
turnaround of the innings scuppered our plans.
The
previously dry wicket suddenly became greasy and the opening bowlers
Holmes and Jack Wright kept losing their footing, sending wild
deliveries down to the Tailenders, who took merciless advantage.
Openers Wilson Digby and Josh Cofie located the gaps we had
failed to find, steaming ahead at twice the rate required. They had
reached 55 by the fifth over before Holmes caught Digby off a Fahim
Pathan delivery.
Anthony Cody came in for a quick 10, but
lifted a looping ball from Ilyas Mansha into Holmes’ safe hands.
Five balls – and nine runs – later, Mansha dismissed Cofie for 38
with another airy delivery, this time landing in the clutches of
Jonathan Stebbins on the boundary.
But with the score at 97,
four batters left and six overs to go, there was only one way the
match was going to end. John Speakman (9) and Jimmy Robertson (8)
dibbled and dabbled the remaining runs and passed the finishing line
with two overs to spare.
