Played at Victoria Park, pitch 2 Report by Hassan Khan
This fixture was season defining for both clubs. For the Camel,
Division 2 winners in 2017, a win would place them joint top of
Division 2. For us, languishing at the bottom of the division on
four points and just one win, it was a tough ask to break the
sequence of crushing defeats. It was a David v Goliath contest,
further reinforced by the fact that Camel had a berth in the VPCCL
Cup semi-final.
As my good friend and Camel skipper Tom
Porter and I tossed up, his team were practising fielding drills. We
were, in contrast, awaiting the arrival of perennially late Naveen.
Having won the toss, I elected to bat. Openers Tipu and
Ilyas got us off to a flyer at 60-0 from four overs. Unperturbed,
Camel switched bowlers effectively and tied us down.
When
Ilyas was bowled, the good work was continued by Ollie and we edged
closer to 100. Tipu missed out on a well deserved 50 but he set us a
platform for a competitive score.
Myself, Jacob and Nick all
contributed as we finished on 127-4 from our allotted 16 overs.
Naveen and I opened up the bowling. With all our fielders on the
boundary, Camel openers Tom and Brendan pushed 1s & 2s comfortably.
This forced me to bring a couple of fielders in. They couldn't hit
boundaries consistently but were happily cruising at 58-0 after
eight overs.
Tipu and Jacob now took up the mantle. Camel
had to take risks with 70 required and Brendan was run out. 30
needed from three overs became 20 needed from two.
A
brilliant penultimate over from 17-year-old Jacob left the equation
at 14 required from six balls.
A leg stump half-volley
crashed to the boundary ... 10 from 5. In the twilight, a debatable
wide and it was now seven from three.
Five from two
deliveries became three to win from the final ball. With darkness
descending on Victoria Park the batsmen scampered two but Ollie, who
had kept superbly throughout, gathered the ball cleanly - resulting
in a tie (only the second time the Old Fallopians have tied a game
at Victoria Park - the first was a
157-run draw
against Martians in 2010)
Both sides agreed it
was the most thrilling of matches. Well played Fallopians. A great
team effort.
